Is Luka Playing Tonight? Injury Status, Updates & Next Game (2026)

Is Luka playing tonight? No, and that answer holds for months. The 2025-26 NBA season finished on June 13, 2026; the Lakers were knocked out in May, and Doncic has spent his summer rehabbing a hamstring.

This page exists so you never have to guess. Below is his status right now, the date basketball comes back, his 2025-26 availability record, and a three-step routine for settling the question yourself on any game day.

Question Answer, late July 2026
Playing tonight? No. The league is in its offseason and no games are scheduled
Team Los Angeles Lakers, guard, No. 77
Last competitive game The 2026 Western Conference semifinals against Oklahoma City
Current issue Hamstring. ESPN still lists him as day-to-day
Estimated return October 1, 2026, per ESPN’s NBA injury table
Next live basketball Preseason in October, then the regular season later that month
Fastest place to check The official NBA injury report, then the Lakers game page

Key takeaways

  • Nobody in the NBA plays in late July, so tonight the answer is no.
  • Doncic appeared in 64 of 82 regular season games in 2025-26 and led the league at 33.5 points per game.
  • A hamstring kept him out of the start of the conference semifinals, and the team still called him week-to-week in early May.
  • ESPN’s injury table carries an estimated return of October 1, 2026, which lines up with training camp.
  • On a real game day, the league’s own injury report settles it. Teams file the night before tip-off.

Is Luka playing tonight? The short version

Is Luka playing tonight? The short version

No NBA team plays in late July. The season ended on June 13, 2026, when New York beat San Antonio 94-90 in Game 5 of the Finals. Los Angeles was already out by then, swept by Oklahoma City in the second round. Doncic will not appear in a competitive game until preseason opens in October. That is the whole answer for tonight. The rest of this page covers what happens next.  For a closer look at this, see Texas vs. Kentucky.

When he plays again: the 2026-27 calendar

The league has published its early-season landmarks but not the full 2026-27 schedule. Basketball Reference’s 2026-27 game index is still a dead link, and NBA.com’s key dates page stops short of naming an opening night. Here is what is already fixed.

  • Late September 2026: training camps open, and media day gives the first honest update on the hamstring.
  • October 9 and 11, 2026: the China Games open the preseason, with Dallas facing Houston.
  • Second half of October: the regular season tips off. NBA Cup group play starts October 30, so opening night lands before that.
  • December 11, 2026: the NBA Cup final in Indianapolis.
  • February 19 to 21, 2027: All-Star weekend in Phoenix.

Once the league publishes the schedule, every Lakers tip-off time shows up on the team’s own game page, usually in mid-August. We track those dates next to the rest of our match analysis in our sport section

How to check his status yourself on game day

How to check his status yourself on game day

Three sources answer this in under a minute. Use them in this order.

  1. The official NBA injury report. Teams file a status for every affected player by 5 pm local time the day before a game. On the second night of a back-to-back, the deadline moves to 1 pm on game day. Every club also files a game-day update between 11 am and 1 pm local time, or between 8 and 10 am when tip-off is 5 pm or earlier. Those rules come from the league’s published injury report policy
  1. The Lakers game page on NBA.com. It carries the tip-off time converted to your zone, plus the team’s own status line once the report drops.
  1. ESPN’s NBA injury table. It adds the beat-writer detail the league form leaves out. In late July, it listed him as day-to-day with a hamstring and an estimated return of October 1, next to a note that he had begun running.

The report labels each player out, doubtful, questionable, or probable. Questionable is the one that keeps you refreshing, because it usually gets resolved close to tip-off.

One habit saves a lot of scrolling: read the report first, then the team page. The order matters because the report moves before anything else does.

What the hamstring took from his season

The injury log tells this story better than any quote does. He tweaked a leg in December and a groin in mid-January. An ankle followed two weeks later. Then the hamstring went twice, in February and again on April 2, 2026, with the playoffs three weeks away. The log below groups them by body part and date.

Date reported Body part
December 20, 2025 Leg
January 16, 2026 Groin
January 29, 2026 Ankle
February 5, 2026 Hamstring
April 2, 2026 Hamstring

He still made the postseason and helped Los Angeles past Houston in six games. Then NBA.com reported he would miss the start of the Western Conference semifinals, and the club described him as week-to-week in early May. The Thunder swept the series 4-0, and the summer began early.

That pattern is ordinary for his position. A 2026 study in the Journal of Athletic Training reviewed 181 hamstring injuries across four NBA seasons and found guards accounted for 65.7% of them. Players missed an average of 5.5 games each, and 16.0% suffered a reinjury within three months. Most of the injuries were noncontact, and 41.9% happened as a player planted or jumped.

His 2025-26 availability record

Doncic played 64 of the Lakers’ 82 regular season games and started every one, which means 18 were missed. He led the NBA at 33.5 points per game on 47.6% shooting, added 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists, and logged 2,289 minutes. Eighteen absences sit close to his normal. He has cleared 70 games once since 2019.

Injury history, season by season

Season Team Games played
2018-19 Dallas 72
2019-20 Dallas 61
2020-21 Dallas 66
2021-22 Dallas 65
2022-23 Dallas 66
2023-24 Dallas 70
2024-25 Dallas and Lakers 50
2025-26 Lakers 64

Two of those years were shortened by the pandemic, so 2019-20 and 2020-21 never had 82 games on offer. The shape holds anyway. He misses somewhere between a dozen and twenty games most years, and the 2024-25 low came with a midseason trade from Dallas that split his season across two rosters. For the wider career picture, our athlete profiles and career journeys section covers the road from Real Madrid to Los Angeles.

What usually keeps Luka out

What usually keeps Luka out
  • Soft tissue. Hamstring, groin and calf strains drive most of his multi-game absences, and they come back.
  • Ankles. A rolled ankle typically means a game or two out, not weeks.
  • Rest. Teams still sit healthy stars now and then, most often on the second night of a back-to-back.
  • Illness and personal reasons. These land on the report late and are the hardest to see coming.

A rough rule for reading his listing: a soft-tissue note means think in weeks, an ankle or illness note means think in days.

Where the Lakers sit right now

Los Angeles went 53-29 last season, won the Pacific Division and took the fourth seed in the West. The offseason then changed the room around him. LeBron James is no longer on the roster. The front office added Quentin Grimes, Walker Kessler and Sandro Mamukelashvili around Doncic and Austin Reaves, and JJ Redick is still the coach.

That matters for availability. With more of the offense running through one guard, minutes and usage climb, and his usage rate already led the league at 38.0% in 2025-26.

Frequently asked questions

Is Luka playing tonight in a Summer League or national team game?

No. Las Vegas Summer League ran July 9 to 19 and is built for rookies and young prospects. He spent the month rehabbing instead.

When is the Lakers’ first game of 2026-27?

Not announced yet. Preseason starts in early October, and NBA Cup group play begins October 30, which puts opening night in the second half of October.

How many games did he miss last season?

Eighteen of 82. He appeared in 64 and started all of them.

Is he still a Laker?

Yes. He arrived in the midseason trade during 2024-25 and remains on the roster at guard, wearing No. 77.

Which source changes fastest on a game day?

The official injury report. It updates before the team site does, and it is the document every other outlet copies from.
