Halsin BG3: Recruit, Romance and Build Him in 2026

Halsin BG3: Recruit, Romance and Build Him in 2026

Halsin BG3 recruitment runs across two acts, and the game never says so out loud. You free him under the Goblin Camp, he thanks you, then he sits in camp for hours doing nothing useful. He only turns into a party member you can control after one specific Act 2 quest. Nothing on screen tells you that.

Short answer: free the caged bear in the Worg Pens, kill the three goblin leaders, and leave the Emerald Grove standing. Do that, and he moves into your camp. Control of him comes in Act 2, once you finish Lift the Shadow Curse. His romance offer arrives in Act 3.

The quick version

Two numbers shape most runs: three goblin leaders in Act 1, and four turns of portal defense in Act 2. Larian stopped shipping new story content after Patch 8, so this advice holds. We track version changes in our gaming news and guides

Key takeaways

  • Halsin cannot enter your active party in Act 1, no matter how early you free him.
  • Raid the Emerald Grove or side with Minthara, and he is lost for the whole run.
  • His romance opens in Act 3 only, and one missed long rest can shut it forever.
  • He shows up as a Circle of the Moon druid, and Withers can respec him into any Patch 8 subclass.
  • The live build of the game is Hotfix 36, from March 26, 2026.

Where to find him in Act 1

Where to find him in Act 1

Look for the Worg Pens, a side room off the Shattered Sanctum beneath the Goblin Camp. You reach it through the ornate door on the eastern side of the throne area. The goblins tormenting the caged bear have no idea who they caught. Cast Speak with Animals before you walk up, because the whole scene reads differently when you understand him.

Getting into the camp is the harder half. Three entrances exist. None of them force a fight, provided you scout first and pick your approach before anyone spots you.

  1. The heavy oak doors at the front, watched by Warrior Trinzas. Talk or deceive your way past her.
  1. The side passageway, which the goblins seeded with blast mines. Disarm them, or set them off from range.
  1. The cracked wall on the west side opens to deal force damage.

That camp rewards patience and quiet movement more than raw damage. If your setup fights you there, our gaming equipment reviews go through controllers and mice.

Open the cage and a fight starts with Butcher Vrak, Beastmaster Zurk, and the goblins nearby. Halsin swings in beside you for that one encounter. That does not make him a recruit, and the game does nothing to clear up the difference.

The three stages of Halsin BG3 recruitment

Larian wrote him in three separate states, and no tooltip explains the difference. That gap is why so many players think their save broke.

He starts as a temporary follower in the Shattered Sanctum, fighting beside you for a single encounter before heading to the grove to confront Kagha. Once the tieflings are safe, he becomes a camp resident, present for conversation but locked out of your party slots. Only after Lift the Shadow Curse does he turn into a full companion you can select, equip, then level up like any origin character.

Three states, one name.

The four-turn portal defense that decides everything

The four-turn portal defense that decides everything

Act 2 is where runs quietly go wrong, and the warning signs are easy to miss until the fight has already started. On the lakeshore north of Last Light Inn, the archdruid opens a portal into the Shadowfell to pull Thaniel back, and he steps through it himself. Your job is the portal. Nothing else.

Three waves arrive over four turns: shadows, wraiths, shadow mastiffs, plus shadow-cursed humanoids. They walk past your characters to reach the portal, so target whatever is closest to it rather than whatever is closest to you. Fog Cloud, Spike Growth, and a couple of summons buy the turns you need.

Treat it as a defense mission, not a brawl.

Lose the portal, and Halsin stays in the Shadowfell. The quest fails, no revive applies, and Withers cannot bring him back. Walking out of the Shadow-Cursed Lands with the quest unfinished has the same result: he chooses to remain behind.

Build: Circle of the Moon, Wild Shape, and a Patch 8 respec

Every Halsin BG3 build starts from the same base: a wood elf Circle of the Moon druid with 17 Wisdom. He arrives with his druid levels already assigned, so he can fight the moment you slot him in.

Moon druids do their work in animal form. Combat Wild Shape takes a bonus action rather than a full action. Lunar Mend then heals the beast form by spending spell slots, so he soaks hits your squishier characters would never survive, and he does it without touching your other healer. Primal Strike at level 6 turns those beast attacks magical. That matters from Act 2 onward.

Wild Shape form Druid level Notes
Bear Moon druids only, plus Goad for aggro control
Dire Raven Moon druids only, blinds enemies
Owlbear Open to every druid, the standard damage pick
Sabre-Toothed Tiger Moon druids only, shreds armor
Air, Earth, Fire and Water Myrmidon 10 Moon druids only, elemental casters
Cave Bear Unique His alone; no other character can use it

Respec him after Patch 8

Patch 8 landed on April 15, 2025. It added 12 subclasses, including Circle of Stars for druids. Withers respecs any companion, so Moon is a starting point rather than a life sentence. Stars gives up bear-form tanking for Starry Form, guided ranged attacks, and steadier damage from the back line.

That same patch brought photo mode, plus cross-play across PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Console players will find more in our PS5 games coverage

Keeping his approval high

Approval matters here because the Act 3 romance offer never appears without it. Mercy earns approval, and cruelty burns it. That makes him one of the easier companions to please on a broadly good run. The choices that raise his opinion are mostly the ones you were going to make anyway.

  • Free caged or drugged animals, including Nessa and the displacer beast.
  • Shelter Arabella, and comfort Rolan after the attack on Last Light Inn.
  • Reunite Oliver with Thaniel instead of killing him, the single largest approval swing he has.
  • Protect the tiefling refugees at every point the game offers you a choice.

Romance: when the offer comes and how it closes

Romance: when the offer comes and how it closes

You can flirt with him through Act 1 and Act 2 without committing to anything. The real offer arrives in Act 3, at camp in Rivington or the Lower City, and only after Lift the Shadow Curse is behind you.

Nothing about his offer assumes exclusivity, and the writing supports that. His romance is available to any player character, of any gender. A peer-reviewed 2026 article in the journal Postmedieval, published by Cornell University’s Lars Johnson, argues that every companion in the game is canonically queer. A given playthrough may never make that explicit.

Timing is the whole trap.

Now the part most guides skip. If his offer lands while you are already romancing someone, you have to get that partner’s blessing before your next long rest. Miss that window and his path shuts permanently, with no way to reopen it later in the act.

  • Shadowheart, Astarion, and Karlach will agree to share.
  • Lae’zel, Wyll, and Gale refuse, so you choose one relationship or the other.

The bear form scene is real. It is also optional. Halsin loses his grip on his shape partway through, and your dialogue decides whether he holds the elven form or finishes as a bear.

Ways to lose him for good

Four mistakes end his story early, and only the first one looks like a mistake at the time.

  • He dies in the goblin fight. He is not a party member yet, so no revive scroll applies.
  • You raid the Emerald Grove or side with Minthara. He ambushes your camp and dies there.
  • The Shadowfell portal breaks during the four-turn defense.
  • You leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands with the curse quest unfinished.

Plan the run backwards from that Act 2 portal. Free the bear, spare the grove, then finish the curse quest before you cross into Act 3. Do that and every option stays open. If you want to know who writes these breakdowns and how we check them, read how the Gamerlume team works

Frequently asked questions

Can he join your party in Act 1?

No. He stays in camp until Act 2, however early you rescue him. Larian built him as a late companion, so nothing you do in the first act unlocks him sooner.

Is the Halsin BG3 romance still possible if you already have a partner?

Yes, provided that partner is Shadowheart, Astarion, or Karlach and you ask them before the next long rest. Lae’zel, Wyll, and Gale say no, so you would have to end that relationship first.

What level is he when he joins?

He arrives with his druid levels already assigned and ready to use, rather than as a blank slate you level from scratch. If the spread does not suit your party, Withers will rebuild him at camp.

Is he a good companion?

For most parties, yes. He is a front-line body and a healer in one slot, which suits a group thin on tanking. Players who want a long personal quest chain in Act 3 will get more out of an origin companion instead.

Does he stay with you at the end?

Only until the Netherbrain falls. In the romanced ending, he goes back to Thaniel’s lands to rebuild them alongside displaced refugees. No dialogue option talks him out of it.
